An insulating filler inside high-rupturing-capacity (HRC) fuses that absorbs and extinguishes arc energy.

When the fuse element melts, the arc that forms is cooled inside the quartz sand; the grains fuse and squeeze the arc channel until the current is driven to zero. The sand's purity and packing density directly affect the fuse's breaking capacity.
